Unless Charter Communications makes an 11 hour decision to carry the Pac 12 Networks this is what we will miss!!!!!

Speaking of Jon Wilmer's blog, an interesting observation was posted regarding why Charter and other major providers have yet announced a deal with the Pac-12:
ReplyDelete"It’s not a big surprise that some cable companies might be holding out a couple days into the launch of the networks before they sign on for carriage. They start paying the conference as soon as they strike the deal and put the network on TV and signing on for August 15th gives you four replays of the Oregon/UCLA game and that, um, isn’t our most valuable content. It’s not totally unreasonable for a cable (or satellite or telcom) company to look at the first two weeks of programming when the network is basically in test-pilot mode and decide not to agree to terms until later in the month before football starts as a means of saving paying the conference, in the case of Charter, $0.45 per household.
Verizon did this when they struck their carriage agreement with the Longhorn Network. The LHN went on the air in late August (well it started broadcasting, I don’t know that it was on the air, but I digress) but Verizon didn’t start showing it until September 1st in advance of the September 3rd football game. It’s time to be uneasy now but it’s not yet time to panic".
This maybe what is happening as you read this and it does make sense since most of the live sports that would draw attention does not begin until August 30th. Let's be positive and see what happens as the Charter and Pac-12 saga continues...
Thanks for your comments that have a lot of validity. However, I want to be there for the start on August 15th at 6PM PT. We need to keep the pressure on Charter!
ReplyDeleteJim, that could still happen if Direct TV announces a deal before the 6pm PT launch tomorrow. If that were to happen, the pressure would be there for Charter to do the same without any more stall tactics regarding the cost etc. It appears Direct TV is reserving channel spots on their lineup to add the national Pac-12 Network and the regional networks as you read this:

Charter knows that if this occurs, many of their customers will head over to Direct TV and not waste any more time with Charter and their way of negotiating a carriage deal with a start up network. So think positive and let's see what happens by tomorrow as we approach the launch time.
