Cal Athletics: Sandy Barbour gets Comcast.... & Goodbye DirecTV

Time for some humor and this is very funny!!!

P.S. Charter get the Pac 12 Networks so I can watch all those satellite dishes disappear from roofs all over Southern Oregon.  You will clean up on the competition! Le't get it done!!!!

16 Days and Counting

It's has been 16 days since the lunch of the Pac 12 Networks and the first college football weekend  of the season has already started and NO word from CHARTER!!!!!!

This is what you missed last night:

The Pac-12 Networks opened it football coverage Thursday night with the Utah-Northern Colorado game, with DirecTV subscribers unable to watch because of a distribution stalemate.

The network also televised the Arizona State-Northern Arizona game Thursday night, and has exclusive rights to 15 nonconference games and 20 Pac-12 games this season.

These are the games you will miss this weekend  if you are a Charter customer:

Friday, August 31
SJSU @ STANFORD
7:00 PM
Saturday, September 01
UNV @ CAL
12:00 PM
SDST @ WASHINGTON
7:30 PM

These may not be the greatest games of the season but they are Pac 12 games and we  want to watch them.  Charter regardless of what happens you have created a lot of unhappy customers. We shall not forget!

More Bad News!

John Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News reports today on his blog:

There will be no carriage deal this week between the Pac-12 and DirecTV.
The same goes for Charter and Verizon — no deals this week — but there’s still a chance that Dish Network and AT&T w/ill jump on board before kickoff Thursday

Read much more here:

Apparently the Pac 12 Networks  has issued a open letter to their fans  that states:

"If you're one of the fans who won't be satisfied without Pac-12 football, or our more than 135 men's basketball games and hundreds of other live events, we recommend finding Pac-12 Networks with another television provider,"

The entire letter from the Pac 12 website:

Dear Pac-12 Fan,

We've heard from thousands of DirecTV subscribers who don't receive Pac-12 Networks and wonder whether they'll miss out on their teams' most important games of the football season. We have worked around the clock to make sure that doesn't happen, but with only a few hours remaining before the kickoff of the season, we're writing to inform our fans that we do not have a distribution agreement with DirecTV.
This means Pac-12 fans who subscribe to DirecTV are in jeopardy of missing all 35 football games scheduled for broadcast on Pac-12 Networks, beginning Thursday night.
As you may have read, DirecTV believes that all Pac-12 fans will be satisfied by the games they can watch through other networks. We know this is not true, based on the thousands of calls and emails we've received from you, particularly from fans of teams that other broadcasters don't typically feature. We also know that the other networks offered by DirecTV won't broadcast 20 of the Pac-12's conference games, starting with the Cal/USC matchup on September 22.
If you're one of the fans who won't be satisfied without Pac-12 football, or our more than 135 men's basketball games and hundreds of other live events, we recommend finding Pac-12 Networks with another television provider.
The good news is that most Pac-12 fans have options. These fans can switch their television service to one of the more than 30 distributors that offer Pac-12 Networks, including Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox. These providers offer Pac-12 Networks' full season lineup, including some of the most thrilling games of the season and TV Everywhere viewing online, on the iPad and on smartphones later in the season.
In just the first four weeks, Pac-12 Networks will feature all 12 schools, including appearances by #1 USC and two appearances by both #5 Oregon and #21 Stanford. Every weekend thereafter we will have at least two premiere conference matchups, all of which will have postseason implications.
To ensure you don't miss out, please contact one of the providers below to get Pac-12 Networks in time for the kickoff of football season.
Thank you for your continued support.

New Rumors on DirecTV

While I am tied up with the Republican convention this week, yes I am a political junkie too, check on the latest rumors here:

http://www.pacifictakes.com/

Will update any info on Charter as it happens.

More Good News on DirectTV

Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News has gone from tweeting the information about DirecTV to posting it on his blog with more details:

Having pieced together information from various sources, it appears the Pac-12 and DirecTV are close to a carriage deal.
Does that mean an agreement in the next few hours … or days … or next week? I’m not sure of the exact timing. And as with any negotiation, last-minute snags are always possible.
But it sure seems like only that — a last-minute snag — will prevent the two sides from reaching a deal prior to the start of the football season.
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2012/08/21/pac-12-networks-updates-on-directv-and-coxcomcast-neuheisels-debut-and-the-objectivity-issue/

As I posted to the  folks over on Charter's facebook page yesterday, the Pac 12 Networks train is moving out with DirecTV on board and Charter should not be left at the station!  I got their usual canned response.

Be sure to read the "comments" to Wilner's blog because they are as informative as the blog posting !

UPDATE

USC Trojan Honk in his comments to this post writes the following:

In response to another request to Charter regarding the Pac-12 Network, customer rep John Mattingly this time has used another prepared statement that compared to the others we have read, offers some positive feedback: (NOTE: Notice the last sentence)

"We are interested in carrying the PAC-12 Network in a manner that takes into account the best interests of our customers. The latest terms offered by the PAC-12 Network require Charter to provide programming to our customers at an increased cost. We do appreciate your interest in our programming and hope to have the network for you soon. "

Hmmm...the word "soon" has been the most positive comment made since any of the various "canned" responses have been posted.

That is good news!

NEWS FLASH: Deal with DirectTV ?????

Jon Wilner tweet this morning:

"Piecing together info from sources on Pac12 & DirecTV: Cant predict last-minute snags but would b very surprised if deal not done "

Great news!!! Gives Charter customers an option to switch if they don't make a deal with the Pac 12 Networks.  Remember the old cigarette ad "I would rather fight than switch" Well, This might be the reverse for Charter customers.  We would rather switch than fight !

For the youngsters out there this from wikipedia:

"Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than switch!" is an enduring slogan which appeared in magazine, newspaper, and television advertisements for Tareyton cigarettes from 1963 until 1981. It was the American Tobacco Company's most visible ad campaign in the 1960s and 1970s.

UPDATE: tweet from Wilner:
"And once deal in place, Pac12Nets will be airing on DTV in matter of hours. Groundwork being laid for transmission of signal "

Charter exec reaps bounty for moving

As a follow up to the news story below about Charter moving their executive office to New York the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported this on August 6,2012:

Life in the Big Apple must be the pits. Why else would Charter Communications have to pay its chief financial officer about $760,000 to move to New York from St. Louis?
The big cable company says it is paying up to send CFO Christopher Winfrey to its new executive offices in New York. His relocation package includes $250,000, plus 6,600 shares of restricted stock worth $517,000 at the current price

Could this by why they can't afford the Pac 12 Networks?

Is Charter's Overhead Too High?

Why is Charter Communications not carrying the Pac 12 Networks?

Charter's Facebook page regarding why Charter and the Pac-12 have yet to come to a deal. According to Emily Klipfel, a Charter Representative:

"Charter is interested in providing the PAC-12 Network to our customers, but only if the cost of the service to Charter and subsequently our customers is consistent with agreements the PAC-12 Network has with other video providers of similar size as Charter. We are hopeful that our negotiations with the PAC-12 Network will result in more reasonable terms and provide Charter customers with value".
Cable networks that haven't been deterred by cost and have deals with the Pac 12 Networks:ComcastTime, WarnerTWC and Bright House, Cox,Wave Broadband,Western Broadband,Orbitel Comm,Bend Broadband, Frontier, Ashland Fiber Network, and The National Cable Television Cooperative.

According to the St Louis Post-Dispatch:The top officers of Charter Communications are moving to a new office in New York, the company said today:

CEO Tom Rutledge, chief operating officer John Bickham and chief marketing officer Jon Hargis will work from an office to be located somewhere in the New York metro area, said spokeswoman Anita Lamont.
All three were hired recently from New York-based Cablevision.
http://www.stltoday.com/business/local/charter-chiefs-move-to-new-york/article_8ff3cbdc-af55-11e1-8efd-0019bb30f31a.html

Charter has most of their operations in the St Louis area and was founded in St. Louis. However Charter recently hired CEO Tom Rutledge who apparently didn't want to move there and so he moved the company to him.  I wonder if that provided " Charter customers with value."?

If they have money to move executives to New York and open a new headquarters they have money to carry the Pac 12 Networks! Get the value to their customers..... get it done Charter!

Pac 12 Networks Start Day + 2

The  Pac 12 Networks started on August 15 and two days latter there is still no aggrement announced between the Pac 12 and Charter Communications! We are not going away and we will not be silent. First football games will be Northern Colorado at Utah and Northern Arizona at Arizona State on Thursday August 30th  or 12 days from now. Get it done Charter!

Charter ..... It's NOT over until we decide it is!

What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
What the heck happened to the Pac 12 Fans I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid Charter will never carry the Pac 12 Networks.  Well just kiss my a** from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this.
Charter, you are going to carry the Pac 12 Networks...... Direct TV, you are going to carry the Pac 12 Networks
We're just the guys to get it done.
 Let's do it!

Pac-12 Network Launches Today; Its Both A Success And A Failure For Larry Scott

I don't very often agree with my Beaver friends but we are of the same mind here:
"But the failure to obtain ANY thru the air distribution via satellite distribution amounts to a substantial failure on Scott's part. So to is the inability to convince Cox to fully offer the Pac-12 outside the footprint."
"But its already a big deal, as the "splash" of the launch has already been lost."
"You can still go to the Pac-12's channel finder to see if your carrier has the Network, and send a message (which clearly didn't do any good) to those that don't. A better alternative might be to call your non-participating carrier and ask why they don't want your business.
So if you can see the premier, count yourself lucky, and maybe even share with the rest of us what we missed in the comments."

Lexington Kentucky but not Medford Oregon

My son who is a grad student at the University of Kentucky in the SEC just advised me he will be able to get the Pac 12 Networks on his TV and me, his father, in the heart of the Pac 12 will not!!!!
There is no JUSTICE :) His email:

just signed up for Insight Communications sports package that will include the Pac-12 network. With folks moving into the apartment, Insight had a table set up where they were selling special deals for residents who wanted extra cable features. They're going to install my new box tomorrow morning, super excited for the upcoming football season! Dad, you can go ahead and use my Lexington, Kentucky access as fodder for your new blog :)
Thanks son you made my day! Thanks Charter!

D- Day.....Pac 12 Networks Day

Today is the day the Pac 12 Networks will start broadcasting at 6 PM PT. For Pac 12 Fans this is a historic day in the life of our Conference and those of us who are Charter Customers we  will miss it  unless Charter works out a deal in the next few hours. The birth of a "child" and we will miss it!!!

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2012/08/13/pac-12-networks-the-football-preview-shows/

1 Day and Counting......it's all about the money

  1. As per the comment in the post below this is the latest word from our friends at Charter on their Facebook page.

Cable networks that haven't been deterred by cost and have deals with the Pac 12 Networks:

    Comcast
    Time Warner
    TWC and Bright House
    Cox
    Wave Broadband
    Western Broadband
    Orbitel Comm
    Bend Broadband
    Frontier
    Ashland Fiber Network
    The National Cable Television Cooperative

    What's the problem Charter Communications??

  2. Charter does carry the Big 10 Networks.  Fans in Southern California, Southern Oregon and other places in the Pac 12 footprint could be faced with the situation where  they could watch Penn State vs. Indiana and miss USC vs. Cal because of the lack of foresight by Charter.

  3. If you want to be depressed go to Charter's Facebook page and see all the negative comments from Charter customers about their general lack of service.

4 Days and Counting.... Some Good News

On thing most reporters missed in reporting on the Pac 12  teleconference yesterday was that the cable system in Ashland, Oregon WILL  carry the Pac 12 Networks in some form.  Many fans from other communities in Southern Oregon have made the trip  to Louie’s Bar and Grill, a sports bar in Ashland, for Oregon Football & Basketball games for the four long years when Charter did not carry the Oregon Sports Network that was carried on Comcast Sports/Northwest that was never carried by Charter. Charter "serves" most of the other towns in Southern Oregon

 Multichannel.com reports:

During an Aug. 10 conference call with reporters Gary Stevenson, president of Pac-12 Enterprises, the content and multiplatform media company for the collegiate conference that bears its name, announced that the Pac-12 Networks had added eight more affiliates to its camp: Strata Networks and All West Communications in Utah; San Bruno Cable in the Bay Area; GCI in Alaska; LocalTel in Seattle; Ashland in Oregon; and CC Communications in Nevada. Pac-12 also has a pact with Suddenlink, but was still working on what markets and networks the cable operator would offer, according to Stevenson

I highly recommend the Jack Daniel's Burger at Louie's Topped with bacon, American cheese and their special home-made Jack Daniel's BBQ sauce for $ 7.99

Another Weekend without a Charter Agreement

Just a few days till the launch of the Pac 12 Networks and customers of Charter are still  in limbo! For four long years Oregon fans in Southern Oregon received assurances that if we were just patient the Oregon Sports Network and Comcast Sports/Northwest  would work out an agreement with Charter so we could watch Oregon sports in Southern Oregon. Never appended.    We are not impressed or reassured by the  Pac 12 Networks  teleconference today. (See post below) We have heard it all before.  We are looking for results and a carriage agreement with Charter. Get it done!

UPDATE

Here is a comment someone made on the post below that I want to re post here because I believe it is a good informed analysis of the situation by someone called Trojans Fan:

There is an interesting observation from OT via Jon Wilner's "College Hotline" blog regarding both DirecTV, Charter and Verizon FiOS:

"The biggest issue between PAC 12 Enterprises and DIRECTV is:

How often will the 6 regional feeds be turned on? Only during live football and men’s basketball games? Or also during live women’s and Olympic sports events?

DIRECTV will NOT budge of the following issue: only the PAC 12 National Network will be carried 24/7.

If the PAC 12 does not yield on this issue and insist that all 7 networks be available 24/7, then DIRECTV will not carry the PAC 12 Networks.

Besides August 30, the big event that the PAC 12 can use as leverage is the Cal @ USC football game on September 22. Any deal involving Charter Communications (mostly Southern California) will have to be done by then to avoid subscriber flight. Ditto DIRECTV. Ditto Verizon FiOS (which is popular in Southern California.)"

It's beginning to make me wonder if this is the same issue with Charter not having a deal as of yet. Charter may want the Pac-12 regionals to only be part time and only show live sports in order to save bandwidth, and allow the national network to be full time on their sports tier. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

Pac 12 Networks Not getting Job Done

The Pac 12 had a teleconference today and did not have much new to report.  For a summery here is a link:

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2012/08/10/pac-12-networks-news-and-notes-from-the-stevenson-teleconference/comment-page-1/#comment-130522

Another summary:

http://seattletimes.com/html/pac12confidential/2018892351__when_you_click_on.html

It looks like the purpose of the teleconference was to rationalize  why the Networks would not have the coverage fans want by the launch date of August 15. Work harder!

No new information on Charter! As someone commented on Oregon Live, fans in Southern Oregon are getting @%#* again!

5 Days .... Let the Word Go Forth

We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to get the Pac 12 Networks that start on August 15th on Charter !!!

8 Days and Counting UPDATED

People from big L.A. to little old Medford, Oregon are asking about when Charter Communications will come to an agreement with the Pac 12 Networks.  Our local newspaper, The Medford Mail Tribune, has a column  tittled "Since You Ask" that attempts to answerer question of general interest that people submit to the newspaper.  Today, it was on the very subject of this blog. No, it was not me who submitted the question.  However, there was little new information  that a regular reader of this blog would not  already know.  In fact, the writer of this column even mentioned that there are "blogs" and facepages dedicated to pressuring Charter to carry  the Pac 12 Networks!
I know of only one blog.  I will put a link to the Mail Tribune column as soon as it is posted online.

Wave Broadband has now signed up to carry the Pac 12 Networks..........still waiting for Charter to come on board.

11 Days and Counting...... Charter we are waiting!

Some good news from a website called Newsvine.com.  The news story gives a very complete outline of the Pac 12 Networks and who has signed up to carry it and who has not. Within the story is this nugget:

Charter - Negotiations are rumored to be going well. Good news for fans in Southern Oregon, for whom Charter Cable is the main cable provider.

I recommend reading the entire story for an understanding of what is going on and how things will be organized within the Pac 12 footprint.

Not Good News!

  • Late this afternoon on Charter Communications Facebook page the following was posted by a Charter Representative in response to a request for an update on Charter carrying the Pac 12 Networks:

I just heard back from local marketing in your area. We are in talks with Pac 12, but at this time we do not have any plans to launch this channel. Sorry if that was not the response you had hoped for. :( I'm just glad that I could provide you with the most accurate information. We have also tracked your request and definitely put customer requests at the top of our lists for possible channel additions. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! -Abby

Charter Customers Waiting!!!..... 12 days & Counting! UPDATE

It's 12 days till the launch of the new Pac 12 Networks on August 15th  and thousands of Charter Communications customers are waiting for Charter to announce they will carry the new stations.

Charter customers all over the United States and particularly in Southern Oregon are waiting and we are not going away!

Check out the comments on  the post  below ...... there may be some movement by Charter.  Check back often for updates as they happen.

Jim Jones a frequent and knowledgeable poster on several Pac 12 sports boards reports:

"Today they added two Arizona cable providers who cover Maricopa, Sun Lakes and Saddlebrooke near Tucson. They are Western Broadband and Orbital. They will have the Arizona Regional networks on the launch date. There is also progress with several others including Charter, Direct, CableOne and Cablevision as well as Wave".

UPDATE:

After I posted over on the Facebook page for Charter that we Pac 12 fans are still waiting I received a generic answer from the Charter rep and then a Joe Uribe posted this:

Joe wrote: "It will Happen Jim. Charter is in active negotiations and we could have an announcement sometime soon. As an employee of Charter, Emily and her colleagues are not allowed to confirm anything involving future carriage deals until they are made public. This is why you will only receive the "generic" scripted answer she gave above."

BENDBROADBAND TO CARRY PAC-12 NETWORKS

Pac 12 Press Release:
BENDBROADBAND TO CARRY PAC-12 NETWORKS, PROVIDING PAC-12 FANS IN OREGON WITH UNPRECEDENTED ACCESS TO THEIR FAVORITE TEAMS
BendBroadband Subscribers Will Enjoy Hundreds of Live Pac-12 Sporting Events When Networks Launch on August 15, 2012
SAN FRANCISCO – Pac-12 Enterprises has reached an agreement with Bend Cable Communications to carry the Pac-12 Networks, providing BendBroadband customers in Oregon with 24/7 access to their favorite teams in the Pac-12 Conference, it was announced Wednesday.
The new agreement allows BendBroadband subscribers to enjoy the hundreds of live sporting events, including 35 football games and other specialty content that will be featured on the Pac-12 Networks. The new networks launch August 15, with Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 National on BendBroadband’s Essentials tier in Standard and High Definition. BendBroadband also plans to launch Pac-12’s TV Everywhere service as part of its “bendbroadband2go” platform.
